Simple Way

About the project

Simple Way is an innovative project that aims to transform indoor navigation for conferences and improve accessibility for wheelchair users. Funded by the NSF I site with a grant of approximately $2,000, our project is based on insights from over 90 interviews and leverages beacon triangulation and augmented reality (AR) to provide an intuitive, user-friendly experience.

The Idea

The initial concept of Simple Way was to assist wheelchair users in navigating unfamiliar buildings by helping them avoid stairs and find accessible ramps. After conducting extensive research and receiving positive feedback, we decided to expand the project scope to provide indoor navigation solutions for large conferences.

Background

Navigating large conferences and unfamiliar buildings can be challenging for all attendees, but it's even more difficult for wheelchair users who need to avoid obstacles like stairs and locate accessible ramps. With Simple Way, we're committed to making these spaces more inclusive and user-friendly by offering seamless indoor navigation for everyone.

The Technology

Simple Way uses beacon triangulation within indoor spaces to connect to a dedicated app on users' smartphones. By integrating AR technology, the app displays real arrows on the phone screen, showing the direction in which users should move. This approach simplifies navigation and provides a more immersive experience.

Indoor Navigation: Simple Way uses beacon triangulation to provide accurate and reliable indoor navigation for conference attendees.

Accessibility: Our system is designed with wheelchair users in mind, helping them find accessible routes and avoid potential obstacles.

Augmented Reality: Real arrows displayed on users' phone screens through AR make navigation more engaging and intuitive.

Presenter Content: Attendees can review content from presenters, making it easier to decide which sessions to attend.

User-friendly Interface: The Simple Way app is designed with usability in mind, offering an easy-to-navigate interface for conference attendees.
